A significant change is taking shape in Sri Lanka’s northern regions of Kilinochchi and Jaffna. With RYTHM Foundation’s support and the dedicated work of NGO Lanka Education and Development Service (LEADS), support for neglected children in Sri Lanka is transforming lives. Children who have faced the trauma of sexual abuse and abandonment are now finding hope, healing, and the courage to rebuild their lives.
This transformation is evident in the lives of children like Priya (name changed for privacy), who arrived at a LEADS Community Development Centre carrying more than just her small school bag. Her trust was shattered, and fear dictated her every move. But, after months of therapy, group activities, and care, she dreams of becoming a teacher – a symbol of hope for others like her.
The initiative supporting children like Priya goes beyond meeting immediate needs. It prioritises emotional and psychological recovery while ensuring children have access to the health and hygiene resources they need to grow in a safe and nurturing environment.
A Haven for Healing
Recent news reports highlighting the rising prevalence of child abuse in Sri Lanka emphasise the need for such initiatives. Data from the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) shows a 38% increase in complaints, with 4,380 cases in the first half of this year compared to 31,172 last year. Alarmingly, the 2,526 cases of children needing care in 2023 have already been surpassed in 2024’s first six months.
Nadeesha Rajakaruna, a LEADS community transformation manager, explains the programme’s powerful impact: “When children first come to us, they often feel broken and unworthy. Our therapy and counselling help them rediscover their value and believe in themselves again.
“The most remarkable transformation we see is the return of hope,” Nadeesha continues. “They arrive feeling lost, but by the end of the programme, they begin to envision a future filled with possibilities.”
For children like Priya, the centre represents a turning point. Through art, play, and structured learning, they have rediscovered their ability to dream. Nadeesha shares that many children return to school or pursue vocational training, laying the foundation for a brighter future.
Ripples of Change
During a recent assessment visit, the Head of RYTHM Foundation, Santhi Periasamy, reflected on the children’s resilience: “The children embody incredible strength and determination. This initiative doesn’t just transform individual lives – it rebuilds families and fortifies entire communities,” Santhi shares.
Santhi emphasises the need to sustain and expand such efforts: “Every child deserves to feel safe and valued. This programme goes beyond restoring hope – it equips children with the tools to build fulfilling futures. It’s a testament to what collaboration and commitment can achieve.”
As Priya and countless others courageously rebuild their lives, the partnership between RYTHM and LEADS is a powerful example of how collective action can spark lasting change.
