In August 2023, RYTHM Foundation launched the Volunteer Development Programme (VDP) in Malaysia, bringing together a group of like-minded individuals who wish to make the world a better place.
How Yu Qian is one such example, taking the spirit of volunteerism to communities in Indonesia where her efforts are driving social impact.
Yu Qian is secretary of Misi Kemanusiaan Antarabangsa Indonesia (MKAI), an international volunteer project under Sukarelawan Universiti Malaya (SEKRUM). Though she wasn’t the project’s initiator, she became a key player in organising and decision-making.
She actively contributes to the organisation, taking on a wide range of volunteer tasks, both large and small. Whether writing communications and reports or managing logistics, she approaches every challenge with dedication and enthusiasm.
Fundraising also requires significant time and effort from Yu Qian. She has managed event booths, secured university approvals for sales, and overseen crowdfunding initiatives. Balancing these responsibilities with her studies is challenging, but her dedication to the cause keeps her motivated and resilient.
Lighting a Path Towards Volunteerism
Asked what motivates her to volunteer, the Universiti Malaya student says, “The VDP inspired me to explore the world of volunteering, so I sought similar opportunities and discovered this project.”
The VDP promotes youth volunteerism by providing participants with the skills and knowledge they need to create positive change.
The programme aims to foster a civic-minded community ready to support social impact causes such as education, empowerment of the underprivileged, and sustainable development. It also serves as a guide for individuals seeking where to do volunteering. Participants are already driving meaningful change by promoting volunteering in Malaysia and their local communities.
Volunteering in Action
Yu Qian fondly recalls the group’s impactful work in Aceh, Indonesia, where they conducted lessons on female hygiene, environmental care, healthy diets, and marine studies. They also led STEM activities, distributed food and hygiene products to villagers, and organised games for the children.
She was deeply involved in the nine months of preparation leading to the project. She explains that one of the biggest challenges was securing funding from scratch through sales or sponsorships.
Balancing volunteer work with her studies and other commitments was also challenging, especially as some team members quit under the workload. Last-minute changes from local partners added unpredictability, showing that no amount of preparation could fully equip the team for the real world.
However, Yu Qian recognises how transformative the experience was. “I’ve gained a lot of soft skills, especially in terms of project management, leadership, and communication.”
Yu Qian’s Most Memorable Moments
One of Yu Qian’s most memorable moments came during crowdfunding at a local market, where the team braved bad weather to promote their project. She recalls a kind woman who donated after hearing her story and another who quietly bought food during a late-night sale when she was desperate to clear the booth.
“I still remember how I felt, thanking her with tears in my eyes,” she says.
However, what made her proudest was witnessing her fellow volunteers’ determination—whether painting buildings or playing with children—each moment strengthened their bond and shared purpose.
Yu Qian emphasises that volunteerism is about doing what you can without comparing yourself to others. She encourages others to get involved. “Just take the step.”
If Yu Qian’s story has inspired you, there are countless ways to get involved with volunteering in Malaysia and your local community.
