A transformative project is taking shape in a small town in north-eastern Sri Lanka. RYTHM Foundation is funding the construction of a new community centre in Mullaitivu to empower the local community through education, skill development, and social connection.
This initiative – a collaboration with the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement (Sarvodaya) – addresses critical gaps in the region’s access to education and employment opportunities. With a significant population of students, graduates, and unemployed youth, the centre will offer a range of programmes – from computer training and vocational courses to counselling and evening classes for primary school children.
Inspiring Progress Through Action
The Head of RYTHM Foundation, Santhi Periasamy, recently visited the site to assess its progress and shared her insights on the centre’s importance.
“This centre is more than a building – it’s a bridge to opportunity. By bringing education, skills training, and community activities closer to the people of Mullaitivu, we’re breaking down barriers and opening doors for brighter futures.”
She also highlighted the broader vision of the initiative to create a space where individuals can gather to learn, grow, and support one another. “By addressing the unique needs of this community, we’re not just providing resources – we’re nurturing resilience and hope,” Santhi added.
Addressing Community Needs
The centre is set to address several pressing community needs. Many local students travel to other districts for essential courses, such as computer training. The new facility will offer these programmes locally, reducing the burden on families and encouraging greater participation.
For primary school children, culturally significant evening classes will be introduced, providing a supportive environment for learning after school and on weekends.
Moreover, unemployed but educated young people will benefit from tailored skill training to increase their employability and open doors to local and international job opportunities.
Through its network of over 25 Shramadana (“gift of labour”) societies and youth groups in Mullaitivu, Sarvodaya will be key in delivering these training programmes, ensuring the centre’s resources reach those in need. This concept embodies Sarvodaya’s commitment to community development, self-reliance, and grassroots empowerment.
Building a Brighter Tomorrow
As the centre’s construction progresses, the anticipation grows for its completion and the positive change it promises to bring. The combined efforts of RYTHM and Sarvodaya exemplify the power of partnership in addressing local challenges and fostering sustainable development.
Stay tuned as the new CDC comes to life – a testament to the commitment to empower and uplift communities through education, skills, and connection.
